Our apprentice team!
Greetings from Medellín, Colombia, where we now have official visas once again (as of the end of June!) and an adequate housing contract (as of this month)!!! And the sweetest part—our new home is on our same street and was made available (after numerous rejections due to lack of official Colombian credit history) largely through our neighbors who advocated directly with the homeowners, a surprise development which brings us so much joy and gratefulness, as well as hope for what God is doing in our community.

Other Big Encouragements Investing in the Next Generation: Shortly after our last letter, our field welcomed a group of interns for 3 months as part of a new MTW program that enables young adults to explore a call to ministry by working alongside long-term missionaries in 3 different fields over the course of the year. We had to refer to them as ‘apprentices’ rather than ‘interns’ since the Spanish word for ‘intern’ normally refers to prison inmates! But that led to some good jokes calling our interns ‘inmates’. Steve especially dedicated much time, study, energy, and prayer to mentoring the 4 apprentices during these months, and we miss them! Many in our local community assumed that the interns were our children; then they started to comment whenever they saw us: “how many more ‘no hijos’ (not your kids) will we meet?” The apprentices helped us, stretched us, encouraged us, and made us realize how deeply we desire to help younger people develop a sense of call, giftings, and missionary service in healthy, fruitful ways. They worked in community outreach, participated in church plant activities, helped with special regional events, cultivated relationships on the university campus, and served in the girls’ foster home that the church supports. Their growing reliance on prayer and their love for each other in spite of considerable personality differences especially encouraged and ministered to us. Gen Z and Gen X cultures approach life differently, and we can learn a lot from how each experiences and reflects the grace and truth of the Gospel in distinct ways.

Regional Women’s Development Event: In May, through the initiative and hard work of teammate Nikki Bonham, our local team hosted the first ever regional women’s development training, with over 30 missionaries and national partners participating. What a treasure of experience, wisdom, personality, and faith in one room as women who had been on the field over 40 years, young women in their first internship, and women everywhere in between worshipped, learned, prayed, studied scripture, and shared stories together! I know that many returned to the local fields with fresh encouragement, new ministry ideas, and deeper connection with colleagues across the region. Parakaleo Leaders’ Training Cohort: Parakaleo continues to provide a space for deep Gospel encouragement, support, and equipping for national church planting wives all across our region, including Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico. Currently I am helping with a bimonthly leadership cohort in which over 40 Latin American wives of church planters are receiving training which they can then implement in their respective local networks.

Losses and VulnerabilityIn the past 4 months, two of our faithful prayer warriors and friends of many years from our home church in our other Columbia (TN) went home to the Savior they love. We rejoice for them, but we will miss Eric Fulmer and Joy Courter so much, and it is hard to imagine our Zion Church community without them. Steve continues to experience significant pain and health challenges which have manifested in varying ways since his concussion 2.5 years ago. God is teaching us a lot about our own limitations, about his sufficiency moment by moment, and about connecting with others in our own vulnerability and points of weakness. There is regular encouragement, but it is also really difficult, and we need new mercies every day, for ourselves, and for those with whom we serve. So much of our work in leadership and in counseling involves difficult conversations, heavy burdens, and hard decisions. We need grace and wisdom and sensitivity to the Spirit.

Looking AheadSteve is heading into a busy travel season, visiting the field in Chile in August, representing MTW at Lausanne missions summit in South Korea in September, meeting with Mexican national church leaders in October, and then participating in MTW’s Global Missions Conference in November in Atlanta. Please pray that God would help Steve maintain rhythms of rest in the midst of travel and that God would use these trips and all the interactions within them to build his kingdom and encourage his people. Women from across Latin America learning together!

Gracias!
As the significant challenges and opportunities keep coming, we can easily feel that we are justpivoting from one to the next for months on end. But it is good to pause and share so many answered prayers since our last letter—thank you for interceding for us! Please don’t hesitate to reach out by text or email when God brings us to mind or to share a specific prayer need that you have. Thank you for being part of our lives and ministry!

Que Dios los bendiga abundantemente.

As International Director for the Americas, my role is to lead, develop, and care for our missionaries as we follow Jesus on his mission of making disciples among all the nations of the Americas. We are working together to see Christ’s Church established and strengthened so that the gospel of his kingdom will advance through all the world. Please pray for me in this mission!

Some practical prayer needs:

More missionaries: Jesus told us to pray to the Lord of the harvest that he would raise up more workers. We look around us and see so many opportunities for fruitful ministry – but the workers are few. Please pray that the Lord would add to our number.

Health Concerns: Pray for Steve as he continues to deal with pain, undergo tests, and explore treatment options.

Travel: Please pray for logistics, ministry connections, and a sustainable pace as we  travel to Chile, S. Korea (Steve), Mexico (Steve), and the U.S. this fall. Come see us at the MTW Global Missions Conference in Atlanta Nov 1-3!

Colombian Pastoral Candidate: Our local team’s church plant has formed a pulpit committee and is actively searching for a Colombian pastor to replace the missionary planter. Please pray for wisdom for the committee and for God’s provision of the right candidate.

Greater reliance on God’s strength: It seems that the longer we serve, the easier it can be to be blind to our self-reliance. Pray that our faith would blossom in a posture of deeper dependence on Christ and the ability to rest in his sufficiency.

We got to take the interns to Cartagena – full of color and life!
